The big money keeps coming for Melbourne Cup favourite Shocking with Sportingbet Australia shortening him to $4.40 after taking a bet of $50,000 at $4.50.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said he was the only local horse punters were backing and he would a clear favourite to win back to back Cups.
“Shocking had been well backed in the past 48 hours shortening from $5.00 to $4.50 and then we took a bet of $175,000 to $50,000 on Wednesday morning,†Sullivan said.
“Punters really think he has the edge on all the locals with the only other horses receiving any real support being overseas raiders Manighar and Americain.
“So You Think had been posted as favourite following his Cox Plate win but I don’t think it is any surprise that punters have made Shocking favourite given his Flemington and two mile form.â€
Sullivan said So You Think had drifted from $4.20 to $5.25 this week with many punters questioning him getting the 3200m.
“There was good money for So You Think the day after the Cox Plate but many punters seem worried he has never been past 2040 metres and the money dried up pretty quickly with him being very easy this week,†Sullivan said.
“A solid performance in the Mackinnon though and the Bart Cummings factor will definitely see money arrive for him before jump time on Tuesday.â€
